Your service shaped you. It does not have to define your next move.
You did not spend a career learning nothing transferable. You spent it leading people, managing risk, running operations and making decisions with real consequences — and then discovered that civilian employers cannot read it off your record.
M1R Careers translates service experience into civilian capability, tests it against roles employers are actually advertising, and tells you plainly what is standing in your way.
I am looking for my next career
Whether you have a separation date or are just starting to think about it, the first job is to work out what you are actually aiming at — and what you already have evidence for.
Support from first thought to first day
Not everyone needs all of it. Most people need two or three parts, and the assessment is what tells us which.
Career mapping
A structured assessment of your service experience, interests and circumstances, producing two or three pathways worth pursuing and an honest read on the gaps.
Resume and LinkedIn
Rewriting service language into the words employers actually search for, without stripping out the substance of what you did.
Qualifications and RPL
Working out whether you genuinely need a qualification — and what evidence you already hold that could shorten it through recognition of prior learning.
Interview and application coaching
Preparing you to answer the questions civilian panels actually ask, and to talk about service in a way that lands with someone who has never served.
Job matching
Introducing candidates to employers who understand what a service background brings. Free for candidates — employers pay the placement fee.
Employer partnerships
Helping businesses write role requirements that do not accidentally exclude excellent people, and connecting them to a prepared talent pool.
Where our people actually end up
Ten detailed guides covering what the work involves, what it pays, which qualifications are genuinely required, and how to describe your service so an employer understands it.
Project & Program Management
If you have planned an activity, resourced it, briefed it and reported on it, you have already run projects. The gap is vocabulary, not capability.

Assess the hazard, control it, brief the people affected, investigate what went wrong. You have done this for years. The legislation is the only new part.

The closest civilian equivalent to running a sub-unit, a watch or a shift. Direct accountability from day one, and pay that reflects it.

Few civilian supply chains are as unforgiving as sustaining a deployed force. This is the most directly transferable trade in the ADF.

Corporate and protective security is one of the few fields where a policing or military background is the credential, not the thing you have to explain away.

Planning for, responding to and recovering from things going badly wrong. Australia has no shortage of demand and few candidates who have done it for real.

Plenty of organisations will sell a transitioning member a course. Very few will tell them they do not need one.
We have made the same move
M1R Careers is run by an Australian veteran who is also a serving first responder — someone who has been through this rather than read about it. That is why the assessment asks what you disliked about service, not only what you were qualified in.
We test against real vacancies
Before recommending a pathway, we review current advertisements for that occupation and compare your evidence against what employers are actually asking for. A career suggestion that nobody is hiring for is worthless.
We name the real gap
Most people are told they need another qualification. Often they need a better resume, some industry exposure, or an introduction. We will tell you which — including when the answer costs you nothing.
We do not sell you what you do not need
Where we receive a referral fee from a training provider, we disclose it on the page. If your assessment says you do not need the course, we say that instead — and lose the fee.
Common questions
Does M1R Careers cost anything?
Registering as a candidate, completing the career assessment and applying for roles through us is free, and always will be. We charge for optional one-to-one services such as a full career map, resume rewriting and interview coaching, and employers pay a fee when we place someone with them. Buying a service never improves your access to vacancies.
I am not leaving for another two years. Is it too early?
It is close to the ideal time. The people who transition best start eighteen months to two years out, because that is enough runway to complete a qualification if one is genuinely needed, build a civilian network without urgency, and take a good role rather than the first one offered. Turning up three weeks after discharge with a resume and no plan is the hardest version of this.
Do you only work with veterans?
No. M1R Careers works with ADF veterans and currently serving members, and with police, fire, ambulance, SES, corrections and emergency communications personnel — serving and former. The translation problem is close to identical across all of them.
Will I have to start at the bottom again?
Usually not, though it is the fear almost everyone arrives with. Twenty years of operational leadership is not erased by a change of employer. What is realistic in some pathways is a deliberately junior first year to learn an industry's systems and language, followed by fast progression. Where that trade-off is required, we will say so before you commit.
What if I do not want to work for anyone else?
That is a legitimate outcome of the assessment and we will say so if it fits. M1R Alliance already exists to support veteran and first responder owned businesses, so if the answer is that you should be running your own, you are in the right place for that too.
How M1R Careers works. Registering as a candidate, completing a career assessment and applying for roles is free, and always will be. Purchasing coaching, training or membership does not guarantee employment, preferential access to vacancies, or representation to employers — candidates are considered on suitability alone, and recruitment services are never conditional on buying anything. Where we receive a referral fee from a training provider, we say so on the page. Read the full candidate and employer terms.
