Security & Risk

Security and risk is one of the few civilian fields where a policing or military background is treated as the credential rather than something you have to explain away. The catch is that the field is wide, and the difference between a guarding role and a corporate security manager role is roughly the difference between a constable and a superintendent. Aim at the right level from the start.

The work

What the role actually involves

Corporate security covers physical security design, access control and CCTV systems, threat and vulnerability assessments, investigations, incident response, executive and travel security, crisis management and business continuity. Risk roles sit slightly to the side — identifying what could damage the organisation, quantifying it, and holding the business to its own controls. In Australia the biggest employers are critical infrastructure, banking, mining and resources, health, universities, retail and government.

Why your service experience transfers

Threat assessment, protective security planning, control-room operations, incident command and investigation are the substance of the job, and you have done all of them for real. Policing backgrounds bring the investigative and evidentiary discipline; military backgrounds bring protective security, planning and physical security design. Both bring the ability to stay calm and structured while an incident is running, which is the entire value proposition when something actually happens. The gap is usually commercial framing — presenting security as a business risk with a cost, not as a rules-enforcement function.

What you actually need

Not everything listed as desirable is a barrier. Before you spend money on a qualification, be certain it is the thing standing between you and the role.

Usually required

  • State security licence for any role involving guarding or crowd control
  • CPP Certificate IV in Security Risk Analysis for advisory roles
  • Many corporate security roles require no formal qualification where policing or military experience is directly relevant

Strengthens your case

  • Diploma of Security and Risk Management
  • ISO 31000 risk management training
  • Business continuity certification such as the BCI's CBCI
  • ASIS certifications (CPP, PSP) for senior corporate roles

  • Threat or security assessments you authored
  • Investigation reports and briefs of evidence
  • Security incident logs and after-action reviews
  • Clearance history and personnel security responsibilities
  • In-service security, intelligence or protective security courses

Straight answers

Common questions

Is corporate security just guarding with a better title?

No, and conflating the two is the most common mistake people make entering this field. Guarding is a licensed, hourly, operational role. Corporate security is an advisory and management function that designs the system, assesses risk and manages incidents — closer to what a police inspector or a military security officer already does. Aim at the advisory level and say so.

Do I need a security licence?

Only if the role involves guarding, crowd control or investigation services as defined by your state's security industry legislation. Corporate security advisor and manager roles inside an organisation generally do not require one. Check the specific role rather than assuming — the requirements differ meaningfully between states.

How does this compare to cyber security?

They are converging, and the strongest senior candidates increasingly understand both. If you enjoyed the physical and investigative side of service, start in physical and corporate security. If the technical side pulls at you, look at the cyber pathway — the entry requirements are quite different.
