Veteran and first responder psychology

Jason is a registered psychologist and Board Approved Supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science with Honours and a Master of Clinical Psychology. Jason’s clinical work is informed by extensive experience working with veterans and first responders navigating trauma exposure, operational stress, emotional strain, relationship difficulties, identity change, and reduced functioning. His work is also underpinned by 14 years of service in the Australian Army. This background provides practical insight into military culture, operational demands, emotional containment, stigma around help-seeking, transition, identity change, and the pressure to keep functioning in high-demand environments. Jason uses a process-based approach to psychological care. This means therapy focuses on understanding the underlying patterns that keep difficulties going, rather than reducing people to a diagnosis. His approach draws on evidence-informed therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, cognitive and behavioural strategies, mindfulness-based skills, trauma-informed practice, EMDR where clinically appropriate, somatic regulation work, and attachment-informed therapy. Therapy may focus on developing awareness of internal patterns, improving emotional and physiological regulation, increasing psychological flexibility, processing distressing experiences, strengthening relationships, reconnecting with values, and supporting practical change in daily life.
